Origin[]
William Blake (1757 - 1827) was an English poet and painter, largely unrecognized during his lifetime. One of his painting's inspiration came from Dante's Inferno where, Ugolino and his children were in prison left to starve. Ugolino's statement that hunger proved stronger than grief came from his sons who before dying his boys begged for him to eat their bodies to survive. Afterwards he began to eat his own fingers to stave off hunger. Blake painted 'dawn before the storm, circa 1826.
