Origin[]
In 1906 an earthquake struck the coast of Northern California on April 18th with an estimated magnitude of 7.9. The epicenter was just off the shore of San Francisco. The quake’s intensity was so high that it was felt across the entire state. Aftereffects including devastating fires broke out in the city, lasting for days. As a result an estimated three thousand people died with over eighty percent of the city of San Francisco destroyed. It is remembered as one of the worst and deadliest earthquakes in the history of the United States.
In January of 1906 the cable lines of the streetcars were to be converted to overhead electric traction. This transition was pushed back by residents of San Francisco changed during the historic quake a few months later. The quake and resulting fires destroyed the power houses and car barns of the Cal Cable and URR’s Powell Street lines, including their fleet of one hundred and seventeen cable cars. Several cars were out in the city when the quake hit, one being Trolley 289. As the streets rolled 289 was tossed from the street into a general store on Market Street.
