Origin[]
Thomas Hobbes (1588 - 1679) was an English philosopher, considered to be one of the founders of modern political philosophy. Arguably his most known contribution was his book, Leviathan, which expounded an influential formulation of social contract theory. In Leviathan, Hobbest set out his doctrine of the foundation of states and legitimizing governments, creating an objective science of morality. Hobbes believed in the necessity of a strong central authority to avoid the evils of discord and civil war. A world without government would be a state where every person would have a right or license to everything in the world. While it sounds good Hobbes argued that this would lead to a war of all against all and the eventual extinction of mankind. According to Hobbes, the sovereign must control civil, military, judicial and exxlesiastical powers, even the words.
