Origin[]

A poor woman gave birth to a son with a caul, interpreting it as a sign he would marry the king’s daughter at 14. Disgusted by the idea, the king agreed to raise the boy and then chucked him down the river, where a nice couple found and raised him instead. The king and boy met again years later, where the king convinced the boy to deliver to the queen a letter requesting the boy’s death. The boy stopped overnight and three thieves read his letter; pitying him, they replaced the death sentence with a marriage approval.

The king again attempted to remove his new son-in-law by asking him to retrieve three of the Devil’s golden hairs from the other side of hell. On his journey, he encountered a mysteriously dried up well, an inexplicably infertile tree and a ferryman seemingly forever locked in work. They each asked about their problems, to which the boy responded “You shall know that, only when I come back". He entered and met the Devil’s grandmother, who agreed to help the boy. She shrank him into an ant and tricked the Devil into explaining the problems while she plucked out his hairs. Thankful, the boy returned and answered each question, receiving great wealth in thanks. In return, the boy sent the king on a goose chase for the source of the wealth, which ends in him becoming eternally damned as the new ferryman.
