Plot[]
Johann David Wyss' The Swiss Family Robinson is a novel about the Swiss family who is shipwrecked in the East Indies while sailing to Port Jackson, Australia. When their ship enters a storm the rough waters rip it apart, the family survives in a part of the boat. In the morning they find themselves within view of a tropical desert island. Getting to the island they discovered several items from the ship had survived and landed on the island as well. These things included cargo of livestock, guns and powder, tools, books and other provisions. Along with the family two dogs from the ship named Turk and Flora also survive. The story covers more than ten years as the family survives on the island crafting a home in the trees, gathering the animals that escaped and bringing them back. Even another survivor is discovered, on the other side of the island, and brought back to their camp. Eventually a ship in search of the single survivor discovers the island and family. The captain is given the journal containing the story of their life on the island, which is eluded to be the very book that is being read. Several members of the family choose to continue to live tranquilly on their island while others return to Europe with the British ship.
