Alice Walker's The Color Purple is the story of African-American women in the southern United States such as rural Georgia during the 1930s. The main character of Celie gets pregnant, from being raped by her father and the reader follows along with her life for the next thirty years. She suffers through an era of racism, prejudice against women especially one with a child out of wedlock.
