Origin[]
A surprise occurred when an American troop who were expecting reinforcements discovered the advancing troop was actually North Korean. Instead of fighting the thirty-one men surrendered and were taken to the Korean camp on Hill 303. Instead of treating them poorly the North Koreans provided their captives with some water and food however later then men had to dig holes to draw up any more water that they needed. Cpl. Roy L. Day Jr. was able to speak Japanese to the soldiers and learned that the North Koreans were attempting to move their prisoners off the hill however mortar fire from the Americans were making that impossible so they put the men into a nearby gully until they were able to move them.
The North Koreans held the prisoners for two days until a UN air strike attacked the hill with napalm, bombs, rockets and machine guns. The officers determined that they couldn't continue to hold the prisoners and ordered all the captives shot. A few of the men survived the attack, including Day by hiding under the dead bodies. That night however a few more North Korean soldiers went into the gully to shoot all the bodies in the back of the head to make sure. Day and a few others tried to fight back but were killed.
