Origin[]
Richard O'Brien is a British-New Zealand actor, writer, musician, and television presenter. He wrote the musical stage show The Rocky Horror Show in 1973, which has remained in continuous production. He also co-wrote the screenplay along with director Jim Sharman for the film adaptation, The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), and appeared on-screen as Riff Raff. Both showcased his interests as a young boy in gothic horror and comic book fantasy.
In many cities, live amateur shadow-casts act out the film as it is being shown and heavily draw upon a tradition of audience participation. The film is most often shown close to Halloween at midnight with many audience members watching in costume. Members of the LGBT community comprised a large part of the Rocky Horror cult following. Today, the film has a large international cult following and has been considered by many as one of the greatest musical films of all time.
Plot[]
The story centers on a young engaged couple whose car breaks down in the rain near a castle, where they seek a telephone to call for help. The castle or country home is occupied by strangers in elaborate costumes celebrating an annual convention. They discover the head of the house is Dr. Frank N. Furter, an apparently mad scientist who actually is an alien transvestite from the planet Transsexual in the galaxy of Transylvania, who creates a living muscle man named Rocky in his laboratory.
Although the film is both a parody of and tribute to many kitsch science fiction and horror films, costume designer Sue Blane conducted no research for her designs. Blane has claimed that her creations for the film directly affected the development of punk rock fashion trends, such as torn fishnet stockings and colorfully dyed hair.
Effects[]
Wearing within ten minutes of midnight will transform anyone’s clothing near the wielder into a punk rock style. Spikes, leather, stockings, torn jackets, boots, chains, patches, piercings, tattoos and eyeliner become standard appearances. Removing them will cause a new, even more eye-catching piece to replace it until enough time passes.
Shaves all body hair down to the skin from the waist down, especially on the lower legs. All follicles stop growing while they retain at least one item on them generated by the stockings, even after neutralization. Only removing everything allows hair growth to return.
