Origin[]
Ettela'at is a Persian language daily newspaper published in Iran. It is among the oldest publications in the country. Ettela'at was started in 1926 and has a conservative stance, focusing on political, cultural, social and economic news. An article was written in Ettela'at suggesting that Ayotallah Ruhollah Khomeini, the first supreme ruler of Iran was a homosexual. The next day clerks in Qom protested and the police demanded they disperse. When they refused, police opened fire and at least twenty people were killed. It would have been more however a sandstorm whipped up preventing the police from seeing anyone and allowing the clerks to escape.
