Origin[]
Primo di Castello (1038 – 1118) was a Genoese merchant, military leader and brother of Guglielmo Embriaco who came to the assistance of the Crusader States in the aftermath of the First Crusade. Castello and his brother landed at Jaffa with a squadron of men between six to nine each. Dismantling their ships and converting them into siege towers they were able to capture the port city of Jaffa with the about eleven men. Proving themselves with the capture of the town with so few people he led three hundred men at the battle of Ascalon. There they were able to defeat and drive off the numerically-superior Fatimid army, securing the safety of Jerusalem. After that he returned to Genoa a hero after making a treaty with Tancred, Prince of Galilee. At his brother’s request the only remaining siege tower was returned to Genoa where it sat as a monument to the Embriaco Brothers' victories.
