Hardtack are hard "crackers" made with flour, salt and water. Inexpensive and long-lasting it was and is used for sustenance in the absence of perishable foods. During the American Civil War, three-inch by three-inch hardtack was shipped from Union and Confederate storehouses to soldiers in the field. Some of this hardtack had been preserved since the days of the Mexican-American War.
