Origin[]

The human ear is incapable of registering sounds below 20 hertz (infrasonic) or above 20,000 hertz (ultrasonic). Other animals will hear a different range, which is why they may begin scurrying about on a beautiful day when they can detect a faraway storm approach. Many phenomena like weather patterns, ocean waves, earthquakes and drilling generate infrasound. The waves can sometimes be physically felt, but most require computers to accurately register the epicenter, as the low frequency patterns travel far from the source.

Ultrasound on the other hand is high intensity and often registers as painful when nearby. Sonic booms, explosions and industrial machinery can cause dizziness, sickness and loss of coordination. Ruptured eardrums are possible under severe conditions.

Effects[]

Produces different frequency ranges in both the infrasonic and subsonic acoustic wavelengths. Most activations are never within decibel rates capable of being registered by the ears. It has a nasty effect on crystalline glass, often melting holes in the normally durable material like it were putty left in the sun. The gate itself can transmit and amplify any note through the crystal radio system to easily reach anywhere in a medium sized town. When tuned to specific wavelengths, the gate acts as a doorway to an unexplored dimensional energy. Different points in spacetime are theorized to converge at one location. The device was powered down before any measurements were recorded.

Effects on biological systems appear completely random, with the pressure differences on a subject causing unexpected cellular changes. Muteness can deaden any speech by placing pressure on the vocal cords without causing illness. Contact with water apparently oxidized enzymes and turned the Director’s skin bioluminescent. It also released a neurotoxin that degenerated balance and the nervous system that can be fatal within a day. Vibrating algae caused a red-tide effect that lead to laboratory waters resembling blood.

Appearances[]

It appears in the Season 2 episode “God Is In The Details". The Piezo-Electric Crystal Radio Frequency Dimensional Convergence Gate was designed by the grieving head of acoustic engineering and church attendee Diane Lancaster. She desired to create a temporal rift or portal to heaven to see her husband again. When not experimenting at home, she installed the radio equipment in the church for Reverend Harper. The coincidental timing of random unrelated events was believed to be signs of holy judgement, causing the whole town to panic into a fracas. All anomalies stopped once the machine was deactivated, although Henry Deacon had to be convinced by the Sheriff not to use it himself.
