Origin[]
Kathe Kollwitz (1867 - 1945) was a German artist who created several pieces but was especially known for granite sculptures. Most of her pieces are considered strikingly realistic but still fall into Expressionism. Peter Kollwitz was her youngest son who died on the battlefield during World War II, his death sent her into a prolonged depression. By the end of 1914 she had gathered his remaining possessions and locked herself away to eventually come out with the design for a war memorial for Peter and his fallen comrades. When the Captain came to her to express regret about not being able to save Peter she destroyed the memorial to start again. The memorial was completed and titled 'The Grieving Parents'. Close examination of the face shows the sorrow of the Captain of who she modeled the father figure after.
