Pan Twardowski was, in folklore and literature, a Polish nobleman who sold his soul to the devil for knowledge and magical powers. In their contract, Twardowski stipulated that his soul could only be taken when he entered Rome, which he had no intention of doing. With his powers, he summoned the king’s deceased wife with the use of a mirror. After years of evading his fate, Twardowski was eventually tricked by the devil and caught not in the city, but at an inn called Rzym (Rome in Polish). While being spirited away, He started to pray to the Virgin Mary, who made the devil drop his victim midway to Hell. Twardowski fell on the Moon where he lives to this day. His only companion is his sidekick whom he once turned into a spider; from time to time Twardowski lets the spider descend to Earth on a thread and bring him news from the world below.

Some reportedly possess names, while others could bestow a limited set of powers. All had the ultimate intention of stealing the user’s soul through a corrupt bargain.
