OriginEdit

There are several different traditions in which Santa Claus' writes names on a Naughty/Nice list. According to Dutch customs children were supposed to leave hay and a carrot out for Santa's reindeer and were informed that if they were not good all year round they would be left a bundle of sticks instead of sweets. British, Australian, Irish, Canadian, New Zealander and American children were told if they were naughty the would receive coal instead of gifts. The most important reference to the Naughty/Nice List is of course in the Christmas song, "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" The line being, "He's making a list, checking it twice, gonna find out who's naughty or nice." Due to the widespread of the song and so many children believing that Santa knew who was naughty or nice created this artifact.
