Origin[]
"Rigoletto" is an opera written by Giuseppe Verdi, based on Victor Hugo's play "Le roi s'amuse." In the opera, the title character, a hunchback jester, is cursed so that, if Rigoletto's daughter ever fell in love, she would die. For the majority of the opera, Rigoletto goes to great lengths to hide his daughter from the world in fear of the curse. The daughter eventually falls in love with the duke, so Rigoletto hires an assassin to kill the duke to ensure his daughter's safety. At the end of the opera, Rigoletto realizes that the curse has come to fruition when he sees his daughter dying, her having died at the hands of the assassin when she saves the duke.
Over the years, the marotte had become imbued with the dedication and commitment that the actors had put into their roles, thus having the artifact start to mirror the effects of the curse from the opera.
Acquisition[]
Warehouse agents were alerted to a production of Rigoletto taking place in New York City, after several of the actors playing Rigoletto were called away on urgent matters. When the agents had questioned the organizers of the opera for the reasons, the organizers had said that every single actor they had hired to play the lead role had to leave due to a death in the family only a few weeks of taking the role. The agents had managed to track down the cause to a marotte, which the organizers had purchased from an estate sale a few months prior. The agents had learned that the marotte was used in many production of Rigoletto over the years, and after gifting the organizers with a new marotte to use in the opera, the agents managed to get the marotte back to the Warehouse.
