Origin[]
Margo Jones (December 12, 1911 – July 24, 1955), nicknamed "The Texas Tornado," was an American stage director and producer best known for launching the American regional theater movement and for introducing the theater-in-the-round concept in Dallas, Texas. She disliked the venue clustering on Broadway after traveling to theater venues worldwide. A chain of independent companies across each region sounded more like her speed. So with the experience of producing the original "The Glass Menagerie" by Tennessee Williams , she returned to Dallas and opened Theatre ’47. Having scattered locations would allow directors, actors and stagehands to have steady work wherever they lived instead of depending on hectic NYC schedules.
The audience was seated around the stage, with little curtains or setting dividing them. Watchers had to actively pay attention as actors were unable to always face the entire audience. In their first season alone, Theatre ’47 performed 57 brand new plays from budding authors such as Tennessee Williams, William Inge, and Jerome Lawrence, pushing their creative confidences.
On July 17, 1955, Jones accidentally spilled some paint on the carpet during a house party. The cleaning solvent of the time contained carbon tetrachloride, which forms a dangerous vapor in large amounts. She was rushed to the hospital the next day from dizzy bouts; a week later, she passed from kidney failure.
Effects[]
The turtle’s shell will pulse with light when placed on display for others. Zaps the user back to the place they consider home, whether it’s their birthplace or their comfortable area. Responds immediately to feelings of longing and tiredness. Will send groups to one location if they all hold contact with another.
Leads to central nervous system damage, weakening the liver and kidneys. Each use accelerates the pain, indicated by frequent queasiness, loss of orientation and periodic comatose states.
Collection[]
Found in the possessions of Freddie Hoskins, a stage manager at the Hartford Stage Company who worked with Jones in their early backstage years. Although she had no permanent home and was often on the move, Margo often had a collection of polished stone turtles. They were gifted to friends as a representation of her desires- sticking out one’s neck, tough protective shell and always at home wherever she was. A visiting agent on a completely leisure trip spotted it and managed to convince the owner she was a historical preservation expert.
