Origin[]

Margaret Dorothea Craighill (1898 - 1977) was the first woman commissioned officer in the United States Army Medical Corps. As a Major Craighill served through WWII and after the war worked with the Veterans Administration. During her military service, she was responsible for the inspection of the field conditions of all woman in the US Army, as well as establishing the standards for screening applicants into the Women's Army Corps (WAC) and for WAC medical care. For her distinguished service in WWII, Craighill was awarded the Legion of Merit. She was shot in the shoulder while in the battlefield and tended to herself before taking on the patients that were closest to death saving many.
