Background[]
The original mace from the Centre Block Fire of 1916. The fire started on February 3rd, 1916, when the entire Canadian House of Commons building was destroyed by a huge fire. The original mace was thought to have been destroyed, and a temporary put in its place until March 27th, 1917, when a permanent replacement was made, although the temporary is still used every February 3rd to commemorate the fire.
Today[]
The mace actually gained the power of the fire and a fire will start around it every year on February 3rd if not properly contained. Now it sits in an airtight container (because fires can't start without oxygen) on a shelf near the Eau de Vie Faucet, just in case.
