Louis Vivet (1863 - 1903) was one of the first mental health patients to be diagnosed with dissociative identity disorder (DID) more commonly known as multiple (split) personalities. Originally claiming to have up to ten personalities his case was re-evaluated and it was discovered he only had two. The others were direct results of hypnosis of therapists. Since his case was so new there was no real way to treat it especially since doctors believed him to suffer from "hysteria".
There was a traumatic experience in his childhood that left him paralyzed, a viper bite, which he recovered from eventually. While he was paralyzed his caregivers described him as kind, reserved, intellectual and meek. When he was able to walk he was suddenly arrogant, confrontation and conniving. Vivet's memories were segregated entirely between his different personalities. There was no recollection of the actions of his various personalities, only able to recall memories of the current personality although all personalities could remember memories before the traumatic incident. One attempt at bringing the personalities together that failed was using magnets.
