OriginEdit

Lorenzo Ghiberti was a Florentine artist of the Early Renaissance best known as the creator of the bronze doors of the Florence Baptistery, called by Michelangelo the Gates of Paradise. He won the commission for the door panels’ artwork in in 1401 in a competition against fellow artists Brunelleschi, Donatello and others. He and Brunelleschi tied and were to work together, but Brunelleschi decided to leave for Rome. Each panel depicted a specific scene from either the Old or New Testament. This panel was bought early on in Ghiberti’s career but was never used for any piece of artwork.
