Origin[]
William Golding's Lord of the Flies is about a group of boys stuck on an island who try to govern themselves with disastrous results. During an unnamed time of war, a plane carrying a group of British schoolboys is shot down over the Pacific. The pilot is killed but many of the boys survive the crash and find themselves deserted on an uninhabited island, without adult supervision. The story describes the descent into madness that a young child could delve into left alone for extended periods of time. Among the children there were two sides that came out, one led by Ralph and the other Jack. Those with Ralph were more mature, while those with Jack were wild and free-spirited. Eventually both groups revert into savages. In the end they are rescued however Ralph weeps when he realizes that even though they are still all young their innocence is lost.
