OriginEdit

Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (1689 - 1762) was an English aristocrat, letter writer and poet. Famously known for the letters she wrote while traveling to the Ottoman Empire. In 1737 and 1738 Lady Mary published several political periodicals anonymously supporting the Walpole government. Going against popular belief at the time it would have been scandalous if she was discovered to be the author. One of the journals contained the hint of her identity, by way of a hiding spot of hers, so her daughter stole it from her mother's things and tossed it into a fire. Lady Mary's belief in everything she wrote was transferred into the leather-bound journal preventing it from being destroyed.
