Origin[edit | edit source]
Karl Denke (1860 - 1924) was a Prussian serial killer and cannibal. For the longest time Denke was seen as a much respected member of his community until he was arrested for attacking a man with an axe. Upon searching Denke's home they found human flesh stored in huge jars of curing salt. Police also turned up a ledger containing the details of at least forty two people who Denke had murdered, butchered and cannibalized during the cold winter months between 1914 - 1918. Denke had gone as far as selling the flesh of his victims at a nearby town market pretending it was pork.
