OriginEdit

Kanhoji Angre (1669 – 1729) was the first notable chief of the Maratha Navy in 18th century India. He fought against the British, Dutch and Portuguese naval interests on the coasts of India as a result of this his European enemies labeled him a pirate. Despite the attempts of the British and Portuguese to subdue Angre, he remained undefeated until his death. These included naval battles along with when sailors would board the ships.

During one campaign in 1712 he and his men captured the yacht of the British President of Mumbai, Mr. Aislabie, releasing it only after obtaining a huge ransom. One of the sailors mentioned that he witnessed Angre defending while his men were the ones who went on the offensive. Regardless of who was fighting, if one of his men was losing Angre would step in to block the attacks and allow his man to rest or regroup before attacking again.

EffectsEdit
