Origin[]
Jupiter Dolichenus was a Roman god who had a mysterious cult that spread throughout the entire Roman Empire from the early 2nd to mid 3rd centuries AD. Jupiter's cult members declared it to be an oriental god, in order to give their cult legitimacy and to distinguish it from other cults of traditional Roman gods. This cult gained popularity as a complement to the open public religion of mainstead Roman society. Unlike more Roman public cults the Jupiter cult was closed to outsiders and followers had to undergo rites of initiation before they would be accepted as devotees. Due to the difficulty of joining not a lot is known about the cult. Despite this countless members attempted to join their ranks with most falling short.
