Origin[edit | edit source]
Edward Scissorhands was released in 1990, following the attempts of a synthetic man to understand emotions after his creator dies. Named Edward, his hands have a variety of scissors, blades and other sharp instruments attached to them, making interaction challenging. Innocent and childlike, a local family in the nearby suburb adopts him as their own, where he slowly falls in love with their daughter. When introduced to the neighbors, he has to contend with the growing distrust against him in the face of his trustfulness.
The film was a course correct for star actor Johnny Depp, who was widely known as a teen heartthrob from his role on 21 Jump Street. He wanted to break expectations, so he practiced the odd mannerisms of Edward by miming old Chaplin movies. After the film's success, Depp found his new niche playing bizzare and eccentric characters.
Effects[edit | edit source]
Transformation of hands into any shape or configuration. Suppresses all negative emotions, causing a stark naivete and gentleness in the user.
