OriginEdit

John Howard Griffin was a white journalist and writer who darkened his skin with treatments of the drug Methoxsalen and UV light to experience the life of an African-American in the Deep South, which he wrote about in his memoir Black Like Me. He made his way around five states mainly through bus rides and hitchhiking, experiencing the racism many African-Americans faced on a daily basis.
