John Hopoate is a former professional rugby league footballer and boxer. He played club football for the Manly-Warringah Sea Eagles, Wests Tigers and Northern Eagles in the National Rugby League competition. Hopoate also gained selection for Tonga, in the Australian national team and in the New South Wales State of Origin side. He later moved on to become an Australian heavyweight boxing champion.

Hopoate’s career in sports has been marked by several controversies and scandals. During a match played against the West Tigers in 2001, he attempted to unnerve his opponents by sticking his fingers in several players’ anuses; he was charged with sexual harassment. His rugby-related infractions continued further, including breaching his contract, verbally harassing crewmembers and striking a player unconscious. His foray into boxing was marked by a mixed level of skill in matches.
