Origin[]
Johann Georg Elser was a German carpenter who planned and carried out an elaborate assassination attempt on Adolf Hitler and other high-ranking Nazi leaders, on 8 November 1939 at the Bürgerbräukeller in Munich. Elser planned to detonate a bomb hidden inside a pillar behind the podium Hitler would be speaking from in remembrance of the Beer Hall Putsch. He successfully planted his ‘infernal machine”, but Hitler departed 13 minutes early from his speech. When Elser was arrested, he was found with sketches of the bomb, firing pins and a postcard of the Bürgerbräukeller He was held without trial as a special prisoner of Adolf Hitler for over five years until executed in Dachau concentration camp.
