James Lind was a Scottish physician who served in the Royal Navy and pioneered naval hygiene. He tested and proved the benefits of taking citrus fruits to combat the effects of scurvy. His later proposed regular washing to keep away disease, ventilation below decks and obtaining fresh water by distilling ocean water.
