The Smiley Carnival traveled throughout the md-east United States during the 1950s. Beginning in 1956 young men who visited the carnival became plagued with the strange form of leprosy originating in the hands and swiftly moving up the arms. It was given the name "Farmer's Rot" by local newspapers. Eventually word got out that the carnival was the source and the townsfolk razed the carnival to the ground. Agents went to the property and collected the surviving items before discovering the source.
