Origin[]

Henry Deacon and Kim Yamazaki were frequent partners on advanced engineering projects, with an implicit attraction between the two. They worked together happily alongside Jason Anderson for 20 years, with Henry usually venturing on his own projects in NASA or Eureka. Kim and Jason later married and toured around research facilities to reinvigorate stalled projects. Kim could manage the endless equations and Jason would saunter in to solve any roadblock in a flash of genius.

They visited Eureka to field test a military device capable of clearing an enemy outpost with protective force fields. Henry was invited onboard to help Kim with the calculations, but only Jason was able to complete the solution. Carter meanwhile suspected Jason’s appearance coincided with people around town suddenly forgetting their plans. The next day Sheriff Carter shot Henry in a packed Café Diem, with nobody there remembering what happened. All evidence incriminated Carter, but also pointed to Jason being reckless at best, a leech at worst.

Henry realized that individual memory disruption was possible using a handheld device he theorized 20 years ago. Jason was also working on the project and stole the device, wiped Henry’s memory, and passed others’ breakthroughs as his own intellect. Kim separately realized that she also had been mind-wiped before, possibly many times out of a truer relationship with Henry. Jason was ousted to both Director Stark and General Mansfield during the demonstration, blacklisted from the scientific community. Henry and Kim reconciled over their shared turmoil and pursued their relationship further.

Effects[]

Erases the short-term memories of people within the burst vicinity, which covers one’s field of sight with a blue flash of light. A period of 20 minutes is wiped from their mind, unable to remember the preceding events. The modulated EM burst changes the binding receptors of brain cells, preventing memories from being imprinted into long term recall. The affected will be stuck in a stupor for several seconds to minutes, hunched over and shuffling unresponsive. Strong stimuli like loud noise or intense pain can shorten the wait period.

Appearances[]

The main appearance was the Season 1 episode “Before I Forget”, eventually returned to Henry as it was his invention.

Memory neutralizer s2

Phoenix Rising

It appears again briefly at the end of “Phoenix Rising” after Sheriff Carter prevented Henry from changing the timeline to prevent Kim’s death in a lab accident. This modified iteration was refined to target chosen types of long-term memories. It degenerated the neuro-pathways associated with specific experiences or periods of one’s life. Henry, hating that Carter altered the timeline, erased the four happy years alt-Carter spent and destroyed the device to keep his own.

Altered Timeline[]

After his return trip from 1947, Henry discovered his doppelganger from the changed timeline worked more closely with Beverly’s consortium. His tenure was underway before the arrival of Carter, but the turning point appeared to be after removing the Artifact’s connection to Kevin Blake with Beverley's assistance. After his release by Thorne, he continued to supply information and used a still functioning Mark II memory neutralizer to hide his involvement from most parties.

Sheriff Cobb was only able to collect any evidence before either version of the device returned to Eureka. He suspected e a constant ethical distaste Henry had to the methods of Global, and the amount of leeway the town provided him compared to similar researchers. The drive all evidence was partitioned onto was later recovered by Carter but damaged by Grace to hide Henry's espionage. Realizing he was still responsible for the errors in judgment his former self chose, Henry shipped all his devices to Warehouse 13 once he became director of Global Dynamics. Best to keep his best temptations away from his worst impulses, as reported.
