Origin[]
George Went Hensley (May 2, 1881 – July 25, 1955) was the synthesis of combining a Pentecostal minister with a snake wrangler. Hensley traveled Appalachia preaching the New Testament commanded all Christians to handle venomous snakes. Several verses from the Gospel of Mark convinced him God’s protection was represented as immunity to snakes, the devil’s guise. Any bites were just a lack of audience faith - of which there were a few fatalities. (He also downed glasses of strychnine and battery acid in several sermons to show his fortitude). The practice reached its height in the 1920s, although it has declined in popularity in modern times.
The personal life of a romping minister was very erratic. He married four times and neglected his children. Partly due to road tripping across the southeast giving sermons. Partly due to being drunk or violent (or both) at home. Or being arrested for moonshining and escaping into the mountains. Or not having stable work to provide for any family members besides himself. During a demonstration at a Florida blacksmith shop, the presentation snake bit him on the wrist. Hensley immediately showed pain from the toxins, and died the next day after refusing medicine.
Effects[]
Alleviates the effects of nearly any poison on the listener. (George was illiterate, so his sister Bertha read passages for the congregations). Can be subtle like altering blood acidity for the timespan, allowing oxygen to bypass the respiratory system entirely, turn the poison into insoluble waste. Or just yak up half their water weight. Yuck!
Wears out the brain’s natural membrane cells protecting it from harmful foreign bodies. Contracting the motor effects of the poison becomes more likely if the body has not flushed out everything. Infections, alcohol and psychoactives readily penetrate the folds. Leads to similarities of memory disorders, loss of motor function and impaired risk assessment.
Collection[]
Was theorized by Artie to be a possible cause of a phantom snakebite in Denver while Pete investigated with newbie Steve, as it remained missing at the time. Was later found in the possession of Walter Sykes’ stash, as he used a different artifact to incite his initial attack against the Warehouse.
