OriginEdit

Sir George Cayley, 6th Baronet (1773 - 1857} was an English engineer and is one of the most important people in the history of aeronautics. Aeronautics is the science involved with the study, design and manufacturing of air flight capable machines. In history he is considered to be the first scientific aerial investigator and the first person to understand the underlying principles and forces of flight.

In 1799 at the age of twenty six he set forth the concept that the modern airplane would be a fixed-wing flying machine with separate systems for lift, propulsion and control. Along with these he discovered and identified the four forces which act on the heavier -than-air flying vehicle: weight, lift, drag and thrust. Modern airplane design is based on these discoveries and on the importance of cambered winds. While the Wright brothers made the first airplane (where they acknowledged his importance in the development of aviation) Cayley designed the first air glider reliably able to carry a human aloft
