George Bernard Shaw (1865 - 1950) was an Irish playwright, critic and polemicist whose influence on Western theatre, culture and politics extending from the 1880s to his death and beyond. Shaw wrote more than sixty plays; his most accomplished works were Man and Superman, Pygmalion and Saint Joan. Incorporating both contemporary satire and historical allegory, in 1925 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature. Shaw's views were contentious and caused unpopularity by denouncing both sides in the First World War as equally culpable. In 1938 he received an Academy Award for his film Pygmalion about a bet to take a bedraggled Cockney flower girl to pass for a duchess at an ambassador's garden party.
