OriginEdit

Gavrilo Princip was a Bosnian Serb who used this gun to assassinate Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife, Sophie, Duchess of Hohenberg, in Sarajevo on 28 June 1914, a decision which would ultimately result in the beginning of WWI. Aftersome  almost comically failed attempts to assassinate the Archduke as he rode in an open topped car during a publicity procession, Princip retired to a cafe to contemplate his groups failure. As he sat and ate, the Archduke's car stopped outside the cafe due to motor problems after having taken a wrong turn. Not believing his luck, Princip took out his pistol and shot Ferdinand and his wife on the spot.
