Origin[]

Genetically crossbred by Seth Osborne, the Violacea necrosomnium is a natural source for sedatives, as opiates are easily addictive and the mechanisms of anesthetic are not fully understood. It has traits of the Oenothera genus and the relative Ipomoea violacea. Oenothera have been studied where one generation can differ radically from the next by sudden and great amounts of mutation. The beach or sea moonflower meanwhile produce ergolines, a type of alkaloid found in high amounts in the psychedelics ergot and LSD.

Effects[]

The flowers are night bloomers, requiring fertilization by crop duster during the day. Music seems to provoke greater growth, especially Ride of the Valkyries. Flowers can be purple in the parent plant but may be differ visually in later generations from hybridization.

The released pollen can put the inhaler into an intoxicating, almost death-like sleep for the one night. After which they begin behaving based on their emotions rather than their manners. Everybody is spilling secrets about pent-up daydreams by fulfilling them. Many involve unrequited romance, aggression towards cohorts or deserving greater respect than given. Each reaction is unique to an individual’s repressed thoughts. These plans often confront others with self-serving behavior and disregard for greater needs. Fights, overdoses, property destruction are all expected. Only burning the plants to the stalk while protected by gas mask can destroy the crops. Detoxification occurs naturally; within a day everyone’s minds are clear again.

Appearances[]

It appears in the Season 1 episode “Purple Haze“. Fargo was sleepless from Osborne’s nightly blaring and attempted to sabotage the speakers. However, the plants spiked in exotic pollen production that night and spread throughout Eureka. Everyone in town blacked out, woke up next morning somewhere else.

Only Jack and Zoe Carter were unaffected since S.A.R.A.H. is hermetically sealed to filter foreign particles. Most however were not as fortunate. Many became violent towards others, indifferent and blunt to any reasonable requests. Deputy Lupo behaved like a child, Henry began commiserating hatred to Eureka, Stark tried to interfere with the Artifact and Taggart was streaking tearing down communication towers. All plants were flambeed into stumps and all air re-filtered of contaminants.
