Origins[edit | edit source]

Fidel Castro is a Cuban communist revolutionary and politician who was Prime Minister from 1959 to 1976 and President from 1976 to 2008. He ousted president Fulgencio Batista with the help of fellow revolutionaries Che Guevara and Fidel's brother Raúl during the Cuban Revolution. During the Cold War, he was friendly with the Communist party and allowed the Soviet Union to place nuclear missiles in Cuba that could easily reach the United States capital. This period of tension that almost led to the next world war and nuclear annihilation is referred to as the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Afterwards, he increased the healthcare and education standards of the country but also controlled the press and forced many Cubans to flee the country. He resigned from presidency in 2008, giving the position to his vice president and brother Raúl after surviving over 600 assassination attempts and schemes on his life. He has been a subject of controversy for his portrayal of violating many human rights while also being a humanitarian at times.
