Origin[edit | edit source]
Father Damian was a Roman Catholic priest from Belgium who helped treat those suffering from leprosy in the kingdom of Hawai’i. He stayed on the island of Moloka’i, set up as a quarantine zone for lepers. His sixteen year long tenure included taking care of his patients physically, mentally and emotionally, until he himself succumbed to leprosy. Damien was laid to rest under the same pandanus tree where he first slept upon his arrival on Molokaʻi. He is venerated as a saint in many Christian communities and is patron saint of Hawaii and those with leprosy.
Effects[edit | edit source]
Eating the pandanus fruit cures leprosy. Those that sleep beneath the tree will become sick with leprosy.
