OriginEdit

Eric Clark shot and killed a police officer at a traffic stop because he believed that his town in Arizona had been taken over by aliens. His actions were one of the first cases of the Insanity Defense. It brought up discussions about whether or not a defendant has a Fourteenth Amendment due process right due to one's mental stage. Clark, who was diagnosed as a schizophrenic and pleaded on behalf of the insanity defense in hopes of using his mental disorder as an excuse for the crime he committed. Before a sentence was decided Clark was placed in a mental hospital for two years where he continued to believe aliens were on Earth but no longer out to kill him.

In a 5-4 decision, in favor of Arizona rejecting the plea and sentencing Clark to time in jail. During his time he refused to eat thinking that the guards were aliens in disguise and trying to poison him. Eventually Clark was moved to a high security mental hospital.
