Origin[edit | edit source]

Empress Dowager Cixi (1835 - 1908) was a Chinese empress dowager and regent who effectively controlled the Chinese government in the late Qing dynasty for forty seven years. By the time the former emperor died Cixi became a shrewd political strategist. While waiting for the key time to take power Cixi conspired with court officials and imperial relatives to seize power. With her new allies they waited for the funeral before Cixi came in and took power. Although it was offered she refused to adopt Western models of government she did support technological and military reforms. In the end her refusal to accept aid from foreign powers was the reason the Qing dynasty fell. She wasn't too ruthless and had been effective in her last few years of her life even though she hadn't originally wanted that responsibility thrust upon her at the end.
