Origin[edit | edit source]
Emma Elizabeth Smith (1843 - 1888) was a prostitute and suspected murder victim of Jack the Ripper. While working she was viciously assaulted by two or three men, one of whom was a teenager. Making her way to a lodge she was able to get help and rushed to the hospital where she survived for a few hours. Unable to describe her attackers she slipped into a coma a died. A later autopsy showed that not only was she beaten but a blunt object had been forcefully inserted into her causing the internal bleeding that eventually killed her. Smith's death was later listed as the first of eleven Whitechapel murders that were linked to Jack the Ripper.
