Origin[]

Emil Nolde (born Hans Emil Hansen; 7 August 1867 – 13 April 1956) was a German-Danish painter and printmaker. He was one of the first Expressionists, a member of Die Brücke, and was one of the first oil painting and watercolor painters of the early 20th century to explore color. He is known for his brushwork and expressive choice of colors. Golden yellows and deep reds appear frequently in his work, giving a luminous quality to otherwise somber tones. His watercolors include vivid, brooding storm-scapes and brilliant florals. Nolde's intense preoccupation with the subject of flowers reflected his interest in the art of Vincent van Gogh.

Even though his art was included in the Entartete Kunst exhibition of 1937, Nolde was a racist, anti-semite and a staunch supporter of Nazi Germany.

Last Known Location[]

Painted around 1936, (exact date unknown) originally gifted to Adolf Hitler and subsequently mocked by his officials for it's "degenerate" nature, not conforming to the "traditional" art styles that the party approved of. It appeared in The Degenerate Art exhibition (Entartete Kunst), a art exhibition organized by Adolf Ziegler and the Nazi Party in Munich from 19 July to 30 November 1937. Shortly after Christmas of 1937, the painting disappeared out of Munich.

Some documents seized by British Intelligence after World War II, seemed to show that Adolf Ziegler had discovered that some of the degenerate art were artifacts. Ziegler did not share this information with his superiors and it seems that Ziegler had kept the artifacts. More then likely hidden away in a stash, waiting to be released out into the world.
