OriginEdit

Ed Wood’s film career is consistently applauded as having either some of the worst, schlockiest or most definitive B-movies ever produced. Jail Bait (1954), Bride of the Monster (1955), Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959), Night of the Ghouls (1959) and The Sinister Urge (1960) run the gamut of genres. Pulp crime, sci-horror and sexploitation adult films all have a place in his delightfully idiosyncratic work. Winning the Golden Turkey Award for Worst Director in 1980 excited interest for his unrefined special effects and clunky dialogue.

Glen or Glenda can be viewed as a more passionate project for Wood. The film, loosely based on the headline sex reassignment surgery of Christine Jorgensen, heavily depicted themes of transvestism and cross-dressing. Wood himself often cross-dressed, a habit he picked up in early childhood from his mother clothing him and continued out of paternal respect. Wood approached the studios eager to direct the feature because his personal experiences with the topic gave him a better understanding how to approach.

EffectsEdit

Changes different aspects of one’s biological sex and social gender. Vocal pitch shifting throughout the day is a common early marker of being affected. Other visible signs include amount of body hair present and limb proportions widening or slimming down. Also affects how the user mentally views them self in terms of sexuality and what unspoken baggage rules they feel applies.

As a remnant of Wood’s lifelong ill attempts at creating a hit rather than miss of a film, the dress makes the user’s environment progressively degrade over time. Machines don’t outright fail – they begin behaving on the fritz or only once every 43 minutes or require being placed in that one weird position where all the components align just right. Same goes for people. A few act-like downright blowhards, but most are suddenly struck by little annoyances that chip away their resolve at being attentive. However, the wearer will never be consciously aware of what’s happening around them. Even as they only experience a moderate amount of discomfort.
