E.B. White's Charlotte's Web, illustrated by Garth Williams is a novel of a pig named Wilbur and his friendship with a barn spider named Charlotte. When Wilbur is in danger of being slaughtered by the farmer, Charlotte writes messages praising Wilbur in her web in order to persuade the farmer to let him live. This draws in attention of the neighbors who declare the praise to be divine intervention. As the time passes more words appear in the web increasing his renown. Therefore, even though he was the runt of his litter, Wilbur is entered in the county fair. There he gets more praise and is declared to be too prestigious alive to justify killing him. During this time Charlotte spins and egg sac containing her unborn offspring and exhausted by laying the eggs Charlotte dies shortly after the fair ends. At the barn Wilbur protects the egg sac but is sadden when all the children seem to leave him once they hatch. However the three smallest remain and the foursome remain friends for years to come.
