Origin[edit | edit source]
Catherine the Great became empress of Russia when her husband Peter III was ousted and assassinated in 1762. During her three decade long rule, she rapidly expanded Russia’s power. Land was gained in the west and south through her noble and military contacts, while she worked on using diplomatic means. Considered the golden age of the Russian Empire, her reign was marked by the absorption of Polish territory, mass construction of new cities and patronage towards the arts. However, the reliance upon serfs increased while the nobility experienced less state requirements, leading to her labeling as an autocrat by some. She died from a stroke induced coma, although false rumors emerged after her death that she was very sexually active, possibly due to the amount of nobility she maintained friendships with.
