The Ed Sullivan Show was an American TV variety show that ran on CBS from Sunday June 20, 1948 to Sunday June 6, 1971, and was hosted by New York entertainment columnist Ed Sullivan. Noted for being one of the few entertainment shows in television history to keep it's time slot for over two decades, Ed Sullivan was responsible for introducing post WWII audiences to breakthrough musical artists of the 1950s and 1960s - including, but not limited to the Jackson Five, the Beatles, the Doors, the Supremes, and of course, Elvis Presley.
Elvis Presley's first of three appearances on Ed Sullivan was actually shot in Los Angeles, in a show hosted by Charles Laughton while Sullivan was in the hospital. Despite the presence of seven other performers, as well as the personality of Laughton, Presley performed longer than any other entertainer that night, and was lauded as the highlight of the show. This episode of Ed Sullivan not only heavily increased Presley's popularity, it was the single most viewed event in television history.
