Aldous Huxley's Brave New World is a novel written in 1931. It is set in London in the year 2540 AD (632 After Ford in the Book), the novel anticipates developments in reproductive technology, sleep-learning, psychological manipulation and classical conditioning that combine profoundly to change society. In the novel the World State is a benevolent dictatorship headed by ten World Controllers. The World State has established a stable global society where the population is permanently limited. The basis of that stability is the conditioning of citizens to accept their station in life. This is achieved by several methods, the abolition of natural reproduction, educating children by the hypnopaedic process which provides each with appropriate subconscious messages, discouragement of critical thinking, discouragement of individual action and initiative and an abundance of material goods.
