Origin[]

Antônio Conselheiro (1830-1897) was a religious leader and preacher in Brazil who got into trouble with both the Catholic Church as well as the Brazilian government in his time. He would preach to the peasants and the oppressed, gaining a huge fanatical following of people who believed he was a saint or the Messiah. This led to trouble with the church, which banned priests from allowing him anywhere near their flocks. Later, after the Brazilian monarchy banned slavery and the people revolted to reform the government to a republic, Conselheiro founded his own village in the region of Canudos, creating a communist-like social system and emphasizing religion. The population of the village quickly grew to over 30,000; however, conflicts with the neighboring areas led to petitions for the government to intervene. After a failed attempt to calm the population, a siege began on the village. He died a short time later after severe fasting, with his likely cause of death being dysentery.

Notes[]

  • The Warehouse has deemed this specific object to be the most likely to have become an artifact based on the history of Antônio Conselheiro. However, there is a slim chance that one of his other known objects could have become an artifact instead. This includes a rough blue tunic, a straw hat, or leather sandals. Agents are to take note when dealing with an unknown artifact with the expected properties.
